Mathias watched as Gabe pulled out of Ripley’s sated body, cradling her weight with ease. Strong emotions filled his head, but he knew better than to question his brother about them. He could tell Gabe wasn’t prepared for the way Ripley made him feel, and he knew the man would need time to come to terms with the extent of their bond.

Gabe huffed at him. “It’s not a bond. It’s a curse.”

Mathias smiled. “Right. A curse. And a damn erotic one at that.”

Gabe hissed, placing Ripley’s head gently on the armrest. “We both know this attraction is because of the effects of the talisman.”

“I agree. But that doesn’t make it any less real.” Mathias stepped forward, running the pad of his finger down her arm. “Love doesn’t have to be sanctioned to be authentic.”

“And one hot encounter doesn’t equate to love.”

Mathias raised his eyebrow, tilting his head to watch Ripley sleep. “It’s like you told Ripley. Some things come down to a leap of faith.” He raised his gaze to Gabe’s. “I’ve already jumped. But I have a feeling you’re still standing on the edge, judging the distance.”

Gabe shook his head and climbed off the couch. “You forget what century we’re in, brother. Women don’t give their hearts away so freely.”

“Then I guess it’s a good thing Ripley isn’t most women.”

“You’re hopeless.” Gabe nodded at her. “We should grab a blanket, just in case she gets cold.”

“Of course.” Mathias shifted, reappearing with a fleece throw.

“It’s common courtesy, nothing more.”

“Keep telling yourself that. Maybe you’ll believe it.”

“Just stop analysing everything and pick a spot. I know we don’t need much sleep, but damn, I’m bushed.”

Mathias nodded, lifting Ripley slightly and placing her on Gabe’s chest. She burrowed against him, making the man’s eyes squeeze shut, before she sighed and drifted off again. Mathias positioned himself in front, wrapping one of Ripley’s arms over him before closing his eyes, feeling a sense of contentment he hadn’t felt since he was alive.
